Over the course of the semester, my public relations writing class was required to use the #pure3600sp14 hashtag on Twitter and Instagram. What seemed as an easy assignment turned out to be a bit harder than I had anticipated. Actually tweeting wasn’t difficult, anyone can do that. What’s tricky is producing content others will value. With an expected 36 tweets and instagrams, it was difficult to consistently create something worth seeing and, hopefully, worth sharing.
That’s the name of the game, however. Can your brand produce content others will value, can your brand grow and develop depth via social media? A major part of what I got from this assignment is that building a brand via social takes strategy and dedication. It’s producing the right content, it’s taking advantage of the right opportunities, it’s about spending the time and giving a strong effort to building experiences and creating a personal relationship with your consumer.
It’s a difficult concept to master. I’ve had similar assignments in other classes and while I’ve been able to comprehend the concepts behind it, I’ve always allowed myself to slip on my social media game once the semester is over. Even this class I found myself passing up opportunities to use the hashtag. It takes practice and dedication to build a brand, this assignment really gives us a good idea of that.
It’s been a beneficial assignment, one that’s definitely allowed me to gain practice and experience with social media content. It’s also allowed me to get a leg up in developing my personal brand on social. I’ve been more active in staying on top with industry news and making myself more relevant to the world of PR. Though the semester is over, I hope I can stay on top of building my brand.
